SLUTTALK:The (Un)Confernece

Saturday, May 26, 2021 - 1:00pm

Vancouver SlutWalk invites you to a participant-driven community discussion about rape culture, victim-blaming, sex-shaming and the controversial SlutWalk name.  Click here to sign up and attend

Last year we were inspired by and acted in solidarity with SlutWalk Toronto. Following comments made by a Toronto police officer that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized", participants across the globe marched in satellite SlutWalks to redirect blame to perpetrators, not victims.

Now, instead of a walk, SlutWalk Vancouver is facilitating more in-depth conversations one year after the march to address these issues, and to receive and respond to criticisms regarding our name.

The event will be in an unconference format - What's an unconference? It's a participant-driven conference where YOU decide the agenda. Speakers from women's groups have been invited, as have students, activists, survivors, as well as people who are unaffiliated with any particular cause or organization.  EVERYONE is welcome to propose presentations to the group at the unconference. Presentations can be planned or spontaneous, and can take the form of workshops, panels, lectures, or simply leading a group discussion on a topic of interest. All topics are welcome, so long as they are related to SlutWalk and our mission.

Suggested topics include: responses to rape we'd like to see happen in place of victim-blaming; men's accountability; consent and what it looks like; and critiques of the SlutWalk name. More topics are welcome and encouraged!

Representatives from Women Against Violence Against Women, the BC Coalition for People with Disabilities, and the F Word Media Collective will be coming and offering lectures and workshops. The fourteen year-old anti-slut-shaming YouTube star Sarah MacLeod will be there to speak as well. We hope to hear your expertise too!

Admission is by donation. SlutWalk T-shirts, dresses, buttons and baked goods will be on sale. All proceeds go to recovering the costs of organizing this year, including venue rentals.

Please forward this invitation to your networks. Don't miss out on this opportunity to share your input in these critical conversations about sexual violence and what direction SlutWalk Vancouver should take!
